Van "Steve" Stephen Moss

Van Stephen Moss, 74, lifelong resident of Blacksburg, SC, passed away at his home on the Broad River and stepped into eternity on April 9, 2024.

Steve was born in Cherokee County on February 3, 1950, to the late Frances Montgomery Moss and the late Winfred Vandiver Moss.  

He graduated as President of his senior class at Blacksburg High School in 1968.  He was a graduate of Clemson University, where he served as a trainer for the Clemson Tiger Football team, in 1972.  He later graduated from the South Carolina School of Banking and the School of Banking of the South at LSU.

He is survived by two sisters, Vicki Hudson (Tom) of Ponce Inlet, Florida and Jane Sanders (Darryl) of Blacksburg, SC and one brother, Danny Moss (Angela) of Inman, SC.

He was married to his beloved wife, Cheryl Carlton Moss for 48 years.  Their love and commitment were a shining example to all who knew them.  Together they raised three daughters: Elizabeth Doan (David) of Landrum, SC, Jessica Suggs (Philip) of Blacksburg, SC, and Emily White (Jesse) of Spartanburg, SC.  He was a loving Papa to 12 grandchildren: Davis, Lauren, Landon, Jake, Emma, Sam, Sarah, Brandon, Evie, Quinn, Sadie, and Phoebe and one great-grandson, Liam.

He was a lifelong banker and founder of The First National Bank of the Carolinas. Steve was a volunteer firefighter for over half a century.  He also served on various committees and boards reaching his pinnacle of service as a South Carolina Representative for District 30, where he served for thirteen and a half years with a focus on agriculture and natural resources. 

In his final years, he could be found at one of his two favorite places: his cabin on the river surrounded by his grandkids or at Jack’s surrounded by his friends. 

Steve will be laid to rest at Hopewell Baptist Church in Blacksburg, SC Saturday, April 13, 2024.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 with a celebration of Steve’s life to follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Hopewell Baptist Youth Fund.
