Martha Carter Obituary

Leesburg, Fla. - Martha Eugenia Carter, Aged 101 years, passed away on January 17, 2026, at Cornerstone Hospice in Tavares, FL. She was born April 10, 1924, the third of seven children of James Wilson Priester and Susan (Sudie) Cornelia Hardin.

She was a 1941 Graduate of Grover High School. After attending an additional year of high school in Blacksburg, she worked for Belk's Department Stores in Charlotte, NC before beginning her career with Southern Bell Telephone as an Operator.

During the 1940's she first married Louis Kelly Rumler. Mr. Rumler was a Marine and as he was transferred to various duty posts, she transferred with the Bell System to various places in the United States including Pecatonica, IL and San Diego, CA. Later, she was divorced from Mr. Rumler and began living in Nashville, TN where she met and married Clyde Edward Carter, Sr. in 1959. She remained in the Nashville area until her retirement from Bell South in 1980 when she relocated back to her childhood home.

In the early 1980's she became a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked at Brookview Nursing Home in Gaffney, SC. In 2001, she and her husband relocated to Deland FL. She was retired in Deland but relocated again with her son in 2013 to Leesburg, FL where she resided until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 51 years, and her sisters, Norma Robinson, Ena Martin, Mary Dorsey and (Ann) Sue Ortino.

She is survived by her brothers, Mr. Robert W. Priester of Cary, NC, and William O. Priester (Joan) of Fayetteville, GA, her daughter Terry L. Monday (Kevin), of Deland, FL, her son Clyde Edward Carter, Jr. of Leesburg, FL , her granddaughter, Judith Candie Bussiere (Mike), of Orange City, FL. She is also survived by two great grandsons, Zachary Spaulding of Ormond Beach, FL and Kyle Spaulding of Orange City, FL. and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Graveside, February 28, 2026, at the Grover City Cemetery at 11:00 am.
