Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable man who touched the lives of many with his faith, kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love. James L Moss, a devoted father, cherished grandfather, and esteemed pillar of the community, peacefully passed away Friday, July 28, 2023. He leaves behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him and love him.
James and his twin brother, George, who were inseparable from birth, were born into a family of 13 children on June 16, 1940. He was the son of Jesse Warren and Louise McSwain Moss. He graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1958. Along with George, he graduated from Spartanburg Jr College in 1960. They worked at Bowater for 3 years and then graduated Limestone College in 1965. James was married to Delois Carroll Moss on Sept. 1, 1963, until her death in 2009. He founded Moss Insurance Group in June 1976.
He is survived by one son, Jay Moss and wife, Jennifer of Inman, SC; one granddaughter, Mary Lauren Bradley and husband, Cole, of Blacksburg, three grandsons, Landon, Lawson and Lathan, all of Inman, one great grandson, CJ Bradley, 6 siblings, Bea Stauber, Sara Johns on, Sue Patton, Marlene Earls, Gayle Beam, George Moss, and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He is preceded in death by one son, Campbell "Cam" Blair Moss and daughter, Kimberly Moss Acrey and 6 siblings, Modra Bedford, Margaret Ann Patterson, Ed Moss, Wimp Moss, Jerry Moss, and Peggy Robbins.
James lived a life of servanthood. He was inducted into the Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 2017 and the Blacksburg Athletic Hall of Fame 2012. One of his major achievements was serving 43 years on the Cherokee County Development board with 40 of those years as chairman. He served on the board of directors for the following organizations: Chamber of Commerce, American Community Bank, First Union Bank, Palmetto Bank, Red Cross, and Spartanburg Community College.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Hopewell Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 followed by the service at 4:00 with life-long friend, Rev Lewis Batchelor officiating along with Rev Landon Moss.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to The Moss Scholarship Fund, 511 Old Chester Rd., Blacksburg, SC 29702, a cause extremely close to James’s heart, continuing his legacy of compassion and benevolence.
