Betty (Kelly) Byars

Betty Kelly Byars, 91, of Blacksburg, SC, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of the late Roy Louis Byars and the cherished daughter of the late Robert and Mary Kelly.

A lifelong learner and educator, Betty earned her master’s degree in education from Winthrop University and dedicated 31 years to teaching in the Cherokee County School District. Her passion for nurturing young minds extended far beyond the classroom—she taught Sunday School for over 40 years, served as a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and was honored as Teacher of the Year. Betty also gave generously of her time as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Cherokee County, reflecting her deep commitment to service and community.

Betty was a faithful member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Blacksburg, where she worshipped, taught, and built lifelong friendships.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family. Those who will forever cherish her memory include her children: Kim Wright (Bobby), Mark Byars (Kelly), Vic Byars (Mary) all of Blacksburg, SC. Her grandchildren: David Gordon (Crystal), Jerran Coggins (Kevin), Hannah Byars, Adam Steele (McKenzie), Cameron Byars (Ana), and Mary-Katharine Heintzel (Logan); Ten great-grandchildren, Four great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Carolyn Going (Don); And a sister-in-law, Imogene Bolf (Steve).

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a son, Greg; a sister, Helen Cameron; and brother, Jewel Kelly.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 10–11 AM at St. John’s UMC, followed by a Celebration of Life Service with Michelle Ford officiating. Burial will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Blacksburg, SC.

Pallbearers will be David Gordon, Austin Gordon, Adam Steele, Cameron Byars, Carson Byars, Kevin Coggins, and Logan Heintzel.

All other times, the family will be at their respective homes.
